인사동을 걷다가 우연히 발견한 매력적인 공간, 바로 ‘한과 미의식’입니다.
이곳은 전통 디저트를 판매하는 곳으로, 처음에는 그저 구경만 하려고 들렀다가 시식을 한 순간 빈손으로 나올 수 없게 만드는

그런 장소였어요.

투명한 유리창 너머로 정성스럽게 정과를 만드는 모습을 볼 수 있는데요. 이곳은 12년간 전통을 이어온 ‘강정이 넘치는 집’에서

새롭게 리브랜딩된 공간이라고 합니다.
그럼 ‘한과 미의식’의 매력을 좀 더 자세히 알아볼까요?

 

While strolling through Insa-dong, I stumbled upon a charming spot: ‘Hangwa Miuishik.’ Specializing in traditional Korean desserts, this shop caught my eye. Initially, I planned just to browse, but after sampling their treats, leaving empty-handed was simply impossible.

Through the transparent glass window, you can watch skilled artisans carefully crafting jeonggwa (candied fruits). Formerly known as ‘Gangjeong-i Neomchineun Jip’ (The House Overflowing with Gangjeong), this shop has been crafting traditional sweets for 12 years and recently rebranded as ‘Hangwa Miuishik.’ Let’s take a closer look at this delightful spot!

✨ 달달함 한도 초과 (A Burst of Sweetness)

한과는 먹는 순간 기분 좋은 달달함을 선사합니다. 그래서 차와 함께 즐겨도 좋고, 살짝 쌉쌀한 술과도 의외로 잘 어울리죠.

제가 고른 제품은 유과와 피칸 정과였는데요.
방금 만들어서인지 유과는 바삭함이 살아 있었고, 적당히 달달해서 먹기 딱 좋았어요.
특히 반했던 건 피칸 정과!
달콤하고 바삭한 피칸이 와인과도 환상적으로 어울리더라고요. 가격이 저렴하진 않지만, 특별한 날을 위해 아껴 먹고 싶은 그런 디저트였답니다.

참고로, 호두 정과도 맛있었지만, 피칸 정과가 조금 더 인기가 많다고 하네요.

 

Hangwa delivers a delightful balance of sweetness, pairing beautifully with tea or even bittersweet alcoholic drinks.

I chose Yugwa and Pecan Jeonggwa during my visit. The Yugwa was incredibly crispy, thanks to its freshness, and pleasantly sweet without being overwhelming. However, my favorite was the Pecan Jeonggwa. The caramelized pecans paired wonderfully with wine, making it a perfect treat for special occasions.

Though not the most affordable option, the rich flavor and quality of these desserts make them worth savoring slowly. While their Walnut Jeonggwa is also delicious, I was told the Pecan Jeonggwa is their best-seller!

📜 한과의 유래와 역사 (The History of Hangwa)

우리나라에서는 전통적으로 과자를 과정류 혹은 우리말로 과줄이라고 불렀습니다.

한과의 역사는 <삼국유사> 에 제수 음식으로 처음 등장한다고 하는데요.
통일신라시대부터 차 마시는 문화가 성행하면서, 진다례(차 의식)나 다과 모임을 위한 다과상이 발달했습니다.
차와 잘 어울리는 음식이라는 점에서, 삼국시대부터 한과가 만들어졌음을 짐작할 수 있다고 하네요.

 

In Korea, traditional sweets are called gwajeongryu or gwajul in Korean. The history of Hangwa dates back to ancient times, first mentioned in the Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) in the Garakgukgi section, during King Suro’s era.

By the Unified Silla period, tea culture flourished, and daejallye (formal tea ceremonies) and dagwamoim (tea gatherings) became popular. With the development of tea culture, Hangwa became a staple for tea pairings. This suggests that traditional Korean desserts were already being made during the Three Kingdoms period.
